Ray Lemon could not shake the disappointment of his failure to lure Barry Boyd into conversation during their surprise encounter at McDonald’s. For several days after, he hardly left the house. He had, he knew, blown an opportunity to make big points with the local cops and the private investigator from Texas who seemed to be someone pretty important.
Too, it had been more exciting than anything he’d ever done before. It had been like playing a role on one of those TV cop shows. Though he had been admittedly nervous about calling Terry Lea King and during the aborted meeting, the events had given him a rush no drug had ever provided.
He dug Detective Momchilov’s card from his wallet and called him. He was, he said, willing to give it another try.
“We damn sure haven’t got anything to lose,” Momchilov said to Dear. Dear agreed.
In short order a new plan of attack was outlined. Aware that Terry Lea was spending most of her days in Medina with her boyfriend while her husband and eleven-year-old daughter remained at the Akron apartment, they decided that Lemon should drive to Medina unannounced and urge Terry Lea to go to lunch with him. Once he got her in the car, he was again to try to get her to talk about her involvement in Dean Milo’s murder.
Again Bill Dear would be in the trunk, listening on the earphones.
Lemon, determined to make good on his second chance, followed Momchilov and Dear along the busy highway leading from Akron to Medina. A couple of miles before reaching the turnoff that led to the house where Terry Lea stayed, they turned onto an access road and drove to the back of an isolated service station. Dear left Momchilov’s car and took his position in the cramped, filthy trunk of Lemon’s automobile.
“All snug and comfy?” Momchilov grinned as he looked down on Dear’s lanky, curled-up frame.
“Just shut the damn lid and let’s get this over with,” Dear replied.
“Night,” Momchilov said.
The day was unseasonably warm, and exhaust fumes seeped into the trunk as Lemon drove. The fumes were something Dear had not considered. He was feeling weak and nauseated even before Lemon finally pulled into the driveway at the Medina house. He began to worry about falling into a peaceful, deadly sleep.
This time they had wired Lemon personally in the event Terry Lea refused to go with him in the car. If something incriminating was said while they talked in the house, on the front porch, or in the yard, the recording equipment and Dear’s earphones would pick it up.
Surprised to see Lemon, Terry Lea quickly insisted that lunch was out of the question. She was not feeling well. Maybe some other time. She was grateful for the loan, by the way, and would try to repay him by the end of the week.
Several men Lemon did not know wandered about the house, in and out of the living room where he and Terry Lea talked. He felt a
